The 10th Gwangju Biennale: Burning Down the House explores the process of burning and transformation, a cycle of obliteration and renewal witnessed throughout history. Evident in aesthetics, historical events, and an increasingly rapid course of redundancy and renewal in commercial culture, the Biennale reflects on this process of, often violent, events of destruction or self-destruction—burning the home one occupies—followed by the promise of the new and the hope for change. The theme highlights the capacity of art to critique the establishment through an exploration that includes the visual, sound, movement and dramatic performance. At the same time, it recognises the possibility and impossibility within art to deal directly and concretely with politics. 12:00-13:00 Lunch at nearby Biennale Site and move to Mt. Duryunsan  15:00-16:30 Riding Cable Car and Tracking

Duryunsan Mountain (703m) is a famous mountain in Jeolanam-do. With its eight peaks, it is a home to many temples and historic sites. The mountain also holds great importance in plant chorology as its forests consist of warm-temperate broad-leaved evergreens and deciduous broad-leaved trees. The mountain peak can be reached by trekking for about 2-3 hours from the entrance of Daeheungsa Temple or by the Daeryunsan Cable Car (one way 8-minute), which departs from the entrance on the opposite side of the mountain and takes visitors to a spot right below the peak. From the mountain summit, there is a view of the three sides of Dadohae (Sea of Many Islands) and on a clear day, it is possible to see as far as Mt. Hallasan on Jeju Island. Nearby tourist attractions include Uhangri Dinosaur Museum Complex, Usuyeong Tourism Village and Ttangkkeut Village. 16:30-17:00 Move to Ttangkkeut (End of Peninsula) Village

Ttangkkeuk (End of Peninsula) Village

Ttangkkeuk (End of Peninsula) Village

This area is famous as it is on the very tip of the Korean peninsula, located in Galdu-ri of Songji-myeon. This is where Baekdusan Mountain ends reaching the tip of the peninsula. Many people visit the area so they can say they’ve stepped on the end of the land and it has long become a prime destination in Haenam. At the summit of Sajabong peak there is an observatory that stands 38m high. From the observatory you can get a full viewing of the Dalmasan Mountain in the north while in the east, fishing vessels can be seen skirting deftly on the surface of the sea. 17:00-18:30 Check-in at a Hotel and Overnight Stay

Haenam  Hotel

Dasan Chodang is the house where Jeong Yak-yong (pen-name Dasan, 1762-1836) lived during his exile. He was a scholar of the late Joseon Dynasty (1392-1897) and is noted for his great contributions to the development of practical learning in Korea. After he was expelled to Ganjin for writing a secret letter of appeal for religious freedom, which later was named ‘the Hwang Sa-yeong Baekseo’, he lived in the house for 18 years while studying practical learning (‘Silhak’ in Korean). Most of his renowned books were written in Dasan Chodang. While walking along a road near Dasan Chodang, you can see the Cheonilgak pavilion, which offers a great view of beautiful Gangjin Bay. Not far from Dasan Chodang is the Dasan Museum, where visitors can learn about the life of Dasan. 14:30-15:30 Move to Boseong County  15:30-16:30 Enjoy Korean Green Tea at Tea Farm

Boseong County has been a tea plantation area since the days of the Japanese occupation(1910-1945), and with its long history comes large plantations, their traditions, and highly skilled workers. The most famous of these is the Daehan  Dawon Plantation. Even the road leading to Daehan Dawon Plantation is very beautiful, full of green tea fields and cedar trees. There are several country roads in Korea known for their beauty, and one of them is the Boseong Cedar Road. Trees 20 meters in height are planted and lined evenly along both sides of the road. About 300 meters down the road you can see a market selling local products. 17:00-18:30 Move back to Gwangju Ciy (End of Touring) * The above itinerary is subject to change.
